Welcome to Terracotta Museum.

A craftsman, creator, artist and almost an alchemist, the potter from La Bisbal is often the last step in a family of generations dedicated to the ancient art of shaping clay. The Terracotta Museum in La Bisbal d'Empordà is, today, the only institution in the province of Girona devoted to preserving, conserving and promoting the material and cultural heritage related to pottery and ceramics. Its visitors get to know the roots and history of this economic activity that is so closely related to the region and that is much more than a mere trade. Be it practical, artistic or experimental, handcrafted or industrial... the Museum shows the whole long history of pottery from La Bisbal.

What's to see?

Permanent exhibition

The Terracotta building. The building that holds the Museum provides, in itself, a complete journey back to the origins of the industrialisation of pottery. This is one of the oldest ceramic tile factories in La Bisbal d’Empordà. Founded in 1928, it's a living example of the history of this industry, with pools to filter the clay, chimneys, kilns... A wide range of elements that go to make up the museum's discourse and make the Terracotta Museum one of the most remarkable buildings in terms of industrial architecture.

Content of the exhibition. The permanent exhibition is designed to provide an example of the collections kept by the Museum, a collection of more than eight thousand pieces including ceramic objects, tools and equipment used in their production. The exhibition reflects the remarkable importance of these collections of tiles, pottery, paving and facings, decorated ceramics and other creations, but also offers other, more technical aspects, such as explaining how pottery is produced, using both traditional and industrial methods.
